Veni, Sancte Spiritus, Come, Holy Spirit, is an invocation that has echoed down through the centuries as Christians have recalled, celebrated, and anticipated the advent of the Spirit—not only that of the great feast of Pentecost, but also in the countless places and times in which God has breathed the Spirit anew into the history of God’s people and the history of God’s world. This collection of essays seeks to draw attention to that great variety of advents of the Spirit, and by so doing to offer an orientation for scholars and students alike to the study of Pneumatology, the disciplined reflection on the Christian doctrine of the Holy Spirit. These essays were originally prepared for a symposium on Pneumatology that was held at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on April 17-19, 1998.
